Welcome! My name is Amanda Evans, and I am currently a Teaching Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) at the University of Pittsburgh. Before coming to Pitt, I was a McDonnell (PNP) postdoctoral fellow at Washington University in St. Louis as well as a postdoctoral fellow working under the direction of Bence Nanay at the Centre for Philosophical Psychology at the University of Antwerp.
I completed my PhD in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin in 2021. Before coming to UT Austin, I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2016. I am originally from Saint Paul, Minnesota. In my spare time I try to keep up with my trumpet playing, which has been a lifelong pastime of mine. I am not currently in an ensemble here in St. Louis, but during my time in college I played in various ensembles, including the Band of the Fighting Irish (click here for a low-resolution photo of me on the field!).
My research focus can be found at the intersection of philosophy of psychiatry, philosophy of mind, and biomedical ethics. The unifying thread that connects my research is the study of mental disorder and the insights it can give us into human agency.
